OPTION 1 - IF YOU'RE NOT SURE ABOUT READING A WHOLE SERIES: Begin with my personal favorite series installment, THE SNOWMAN. When is the right time to tell aspiring writers about their job prospects? What’s on your mind when you write the next Hole story? You walk into a party and find out everyone went to Bard together. JN: I don’t. JN: Most of them — either to Oslo or Stockholm or to Copenhagen — which is not so far from where I live in Oslo. I thought our meeting was at four o’clock, so I was planning to write for an hour. TM: I have to ask about the dedication. I’ve consciously avoided writers from my territory, because I wanted to engage the place totally, with my own language, own vision. The protaganist and title character of the series is Harry Hole, a hardened detective who works the streets of Oslo. This may be a dead road, but I’m looking for a hint. RB: Chandler was in the same situation as Thompson — so it goes. And what I did was delete the whole novel. RB: When I saw The Wire, I never saw it in episodes — I got the DVD and watched four or five hours at a time. His memoir False Starts is out-of-print, once again proving the world is unjust. What kind of music do you like — jazz appears a lot in the Hole books? Q: It seemed at the end of the last Harry Hole novel, "Phantom," that Harry was dead. Begin with her essays for the Oxford American, specifically “Love and Death in the Cape Fear Serpentarium” and “Strange Beads,” then read her story collection Large Animals in Everyday Life. RB: There is another Bostonian, Chuck Hogan [The Town] who is excellent. They made my daddy. RB: You have a varied CV — how did you come to writing? It’s a crazy thing — there so many talented writers that you are not going to hear about. A star (★) next to the title means it's one of my personal favorites in the series! JN: Other series or novels? Max Seeck’s US debut has positioned him as an author to watch. From new psychological thrillers to suspense novels with horror movie-worthy plots to Nordic Noir and more, the first few months of 2021 have so many thrilling reads in store for us, and I hope this list will help you find a new book (or two, or three!) But given that I’m still in the learning-what’s-out-there phase of exploring crime fiction from Finland, I’m also going to give you a little sneak peek into another Finnish crime book that’s on my TBR list. We’ve “traveled” (virtually!) When you write, it’s important to do it while you have the enthusiasm for the idea. In her collection Render / An Apocalypse, she has poems like, “How to Kill a Rooster,” “How to Kill a Hen.” We’ve both noticed that, at our readings, no one objects to the violence that people do to each other, or that people do to the landscape, but sometimes a person will flip over the death of an animal. On the return of Harry Hole in The Thirst, Nesbø said: "I was always coming back to Harry; he is my soul mate. But as Joan settles into her new home, she can’t shake the feeling that something is just a bit off. Harry is a police officer with the Oslo crime squad. And so you have had good crime novelists, good writers, who would, from time to time, write so-called serious literature and almost all the well-known, established serious writers in Scandinavia have at one time written a crime novel. Null is from West Virginia, and most of the literary press surrounding Null’s work lays the West Virginia on pretty thick — this interview is no exception. It’s unbelievable having that as a job. Welcome back to our final spotlight on Scandinavian crime fiction this year! I probably did that more when I was a musician. RB: Which Americans do you try to read? Harry is probably more aptly called an antihero than a hero, and I love him all the more for it. Never? Naturally, I had to rectify this as soon as possible. You can read THE SNOWMAN as a standalone—you might have a few questions about characters' backstories, but overall, there really won't be an issue! JN: The deal is done. I wanted to slap Jo Nesbo. Writers like Daniel Woodrell have parleyed this into good, long careers. And you get tired of it — talking about books, talking about writing. The novel as village gossip. From serial killer thrillers to detective novels and legal thrillers, this month has a whole variety of buzz-worthy new crime releases in store for readers, and I’m rounding up my personal most-anticipated list in today’s blog post! NEW HARRY HOLE: On May 9, 2017, Knopf will be releasing Book 11 in the Harry Hole series, THE THIRST. There’s something particularly exciting as a reader about following an up-and-coming author’s career and seeing their growth and development, and THE BUTTERFLY HOUSE is proof positive that Katrine Engberg is on an upward trajectory. His nonfiction works are just as startling, if not more so. RB: I liked his standalone novel about the 1919 Boston Police strike, Any Given Day. This is not the best Harry Hole novel, and the motivations of the villain are far less convincing than those of the police characters, such as Katrine Bratt, who are better realised. Where to start reading the Harry Hole series: I get this question all the time, and the way I see it, you have two options. I wasn’t too eager to sell the rights for the books as long as I was writing the series. For me personally, my holiday break from work is always my time to dig into some slow-burning and immersive detective novels—there’s nothing more blissful to me than a quiet morning cozied up under a blanket, sipping some coffee, and reading a murder mystery while the snow falls outside. RB: Sales and quality don’t necessarily correspond. As Joy Williams says, “Good writing never soothes or comforts.” Look hard at the brutality people inflict on the landscape, the animals, and one another. Just curious re Nesbo….Jo is yoo…so is Nesbo pronounced Nesbow, Nezbow or what. Like I said I have more ideas than I have time. You know some of his habits, but the plots aren’t cookie cutter. I never was. We’ve already explored Norwegian crime fiction and Swedish crime fiction, and this weekend, it’s Denmark’s turn! tc. Harry Hole is in his late thirties. I would absolutely love to get a copy of this novel and spread the good word. There are, of course, numerous other practitioners of the crime genre from ice-bound precincts — Åke Edwardson, Karin Fossum,  Anne Holt, Camilla Läckberg, Henning Mankell, husband and wife team Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö and Arnaldur Indriðason, and so on. I’m sure there are woefully overlooked writers of skill, as there are everywhere.
